Charlie Fien is, in many ways, an ordinary 23 year old young woman. As a college student, Charlie’s life is very full from her studies to spending time with her boyfriend, Riley. Where Charlie differs from most young women in her passion and desire to tell the world that Down syndrome must not be a death sentence. Charlie is an excellent spokesperson for this cause as she also has Down syndrome.
In addition, she is a very talented writer. Charlie’s first professional article was published on the website, HumanDefence.com.

When I was pregnant at 39, my doctor kept badgering me to have an ultrasound to test for Downs Syndrome. I did not want an ultrasound because they have not been proven safe, but also, I did not believe in having any interventions unless what they were checking for was something that was actionable in a positive way, meaning finding it early could prevent loss of my pregnancy. So many of the tests they wanted me to take were about identifying “defects” early so that a mother could choose whether to carry the pregnancy to term. I flat out refused these tests and was harassed constantly as a result and ultimately, my doctor dropped me from his care when I was 32 weeks pregnant. The medical community has lost its way. First do no harm has been replaced by “follow the protocols” and the protocols are designed by the insurance and pharmaceutical industries who care about profits and eugenic agendas.
